Biosafety Information Exchange Mechanism (BIEM) is a mechanism established by the Protocol from Catagena on Biosafety to assist Parties in the proccess of exchanging of information and experience on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
Central BIEM portal: http://bch.biodiv.org/ Management Center: https://bch.biodiv.org/member/signin.aspx BIEM was established as an international mechanism to inform all Parties from the Protocol on domestic use and placing on the market of GMOs about border movement for direct use as food or feed, or to facilitate the exchange of scientific, technical, environmental and legal information and experience about GMOs and to promote and facilitate awareness, education and public participation in the transfer, storage and use of GMOs. "Summary results of the meeting of the Group of Technical Experts in BIEM " (10-11 April 2003) provides the following main ways of implementing national web BIEM network: a. national database store data, but without the presence of local BIEM web site. Data is exported through the BIEM Portal Management Center. In case of poor internet connection, information will be spreaded through CD-ROM's for examle. b. Maintenance of local BIEM web site.BIEM Center Management Portal is used for entering, maintaining and connecting with national site; c. Maintain local BIEM web site. Developing and maintaining national databases interoperable in accordance with protocols for interoperability and standards in line with DB / XML and metadata. |
