South Africa Rejects GM Maize for Biofuels
// THIRD WORLD NETWORK BIOSAFETY INFORMATION SERVICE
Dear Friends and colleagues,South Africa’s regulatory authority has rejected Syngenta’s application to grow GM maize in South Africa for the biofuel industry. The GM maize, called "maize event 3 272", is the first GM industrial crop in the world for which approval has been sought for cultivation. The government turned down the application because it said Syngenta has failed to provide convincing proof that the GM maize is safe for food and feed.Although the GM maize was intended to produce ethanol fuel for cars and not people, the authorities said there is a risk that the GM maize would become mixed with ordinary maize grown for food as well as could harm South Africa’s maize export. Also the government found that the company had not used the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation/World Health Organisation methods for evaluating whether the new GM maize contained allergens. With best wishes, Chee Yoke Heong Third World Network131 Jalan Macalister,10400 Penang,MalaysiaEmail: twnet@po.jaring.myWebsite: www.biosafety-info.net and www.twnside.org.sg
